Blessings and Rights--Brief Follow Up

A couple of follow up items from yesterday's post:

For a more specific, law-based analysis of what a 'right' is, see this post at Volokh today...

Here's a related story from my mission that I think ties into my main point:

The bishop of the ward I was serving in shared a story in sacrament meeting about tithing. He said when he was younger, and a new convert to the Church he went in to see his bishop for tithing settlement one year somewhat apprehensively. He had paid some tithing, but nowhere near 10%, and he knew his bishop--who knew him personally and knew what he did for a living--could tell with one glance at his donation sheet that he wasn't close to being a full tithe payer. He mentally prepared himself for a lecture from the bishop on the importance of paying tithing, and of Malachi, and the 'windows of heaven', etc. He was quite surprised then when his bishop after handing him the list of his donations shook his hand warmly and said in complete sincerity, "Thank you for giving so much!" My bishop felt ashamed afterwards--more so than if he had gotten a lecture--and vowed that he would be a full tithe payer every year from then on...

The point? Attitude matters...a lot!
