News and Notes
Follow up from my earlier post: After a spirited debate, the Southern Baptist Convention voted NOT to endorse a proposition for all Baptists to withdraw their kids from 'apostate' public schools. The anti-gay marriage amendment resolution, though, passed without debate (so, you know, they're united on something...)
Yes, I'm afraid to say, this is from my hometown--and for some reason I wasn't surprised to hear that this happened...
SLC Mayor expresses concern about the LDS Church's plan for downtown. Good downtown areas should "embrace differences of faith, sexual orientation [and] economic status", apparently. I'm figuring the 'embracing differences of faith' means 'Yes, we are going to serve alcohol--I don't care what the Church says...' but how does a downtown area 'embrace' differences of sexual orientation? Open a gay/lesbian bar? Does embracing differences in economic status mean no fancy restaurants or pricey stores (you know, things poor people couldn't afford?)
New research shows religious fathers are better than non-religious fathers. (Who would have thought...?) I wonder what category they put Mormon fathers in?
Speaking of fathers, here's a tribute to the best and worst fathers in TV history. Of course, Homer Simpson heads the list--which gives me an excuse to list some of my favorite Homer quotes:
Homer : I promise you kids lots of things. That's what makes me such a good father!
Lisa : Actually, keeping promises would make you a good father.
Homer : No, that would make me a great father.
Homer: You tried your best, but you still failed. The lesson is--never try!
Homer (after changing his name to Max Power): There's three ways to do things, the right way, the wrong way, and the MAX POWER way!
Bart: Isn't that just the wrong way?
Homer: Yes...but FASTER!

What about this one:
Homer: Everything bad is named after kids. Kidnapping, Child abuse. . .
Bart: What about adultery?
Homer: Heh heh. Not til you're older.
