Censorship, Part 1
Here's a brief article about a mystery person who scratches out swear words in library books. I'm sure this person believes whole-heartedly that the end (fewer printed swear words) justifies the means (vandalizing public property), but I doubt even the strictest advocate of censorship could condone this sort of thing.
Using the 'three attitudes' method I've used previously, let's look at the issue of censorship.
Once again, we'll accept (for now) the basic premise that profanity and taking the Lord's name in vain is bad. That still leaves several distinct attitudes to take towards profanity and other 'inappropriate' material in the media.
(1) I avoid inappropriate material myself, but don't care if other people see it.
(2) I avoid inappropriate material myself, and play an active role in encouraging other people to do so too, including providing suggestions to others as to clean entertainment, supporting companies that provide those forms of clean entertainment (and not supporting those that don't), including providing people with the option of 'edited' entertainment, where the inappropriate material from the book/movie/play is removed, giving people who care about such things a choice.
(3) I avoid inappropriate material myself, and work at making sure media forms with inappropriate words or imagery are not available to others either. This includes supporting only the clean or edited forms of entertainment being available for purchase--not allowing any unclean entertainment to be sold, distributed, or shown at all in my area.
This question can be considered at a micro- or macro- level. If Deseret Book, for example, doesn't stock a book that doesn't meet its standards (or only provides the 'clean' version), is that 'censorship'? Should they be required to provide both forms in order to provide a choice? What if Utah lawmakers pass a law saying that book cannot be sold in any Utah bookstore...better, worse, or the same? What about providing only the 'clean' version without any outward indication to the buyer (so they don't know its been altered from its original form)?
This is a broad issue that I'll be revisiting (including a discussion of CleanFlix and similar companies that edit things) when I have time over the next week or so...

This whole affair made me laugh a bit. I just think it's funny that someone is going to that much effort. I'm sure it's some old LDS granny who likes her mysteries but can't tolerate the word "hell." God bless her weary little soul.
