Random Doctrinal Thought...
The idea has been mentioned for a long time in Church talks and lessons about how Satan tempted Eve (and Adam) to partake of the forbidden fruit because he didn't know what the real plan of salvation was, and was trying to thwart it. This isn't just hearsay, either: The book of Moses mentions specifically (4:6) that "he (Satan) knew not the mind of God, wherefore he sought to destroy the world."
How can this be, though? Lucifer was there in the premortal council where the plan of salvations were debated and decided upon. How could he not know that the Father's plan to allow mankind to have agency and then provide a Savior had been agreed upon--that was the primary reason for his rebellion!
It's hard to argue with scripture, but it seems we're talking about one heck of a short-term memory problem here...
"But, Baron" you say, "If he had known what the plan was, wouldn't he have not tempted Eve into partaking of the forbidden fruit, then--in order to frustrate it?"
Well, the way I see it--Lucifer didn't really have much of a choice. Without the introduction of agency, he would be powerless to tempt anyone and gain any followers. Yes, of course, his plan in the beginning was to force people to be good without agency for his own glory. But, he's on the other side, now--the implementation of his original plan post-rebellion would lock him out from the spirits of mankind for good. Tempting Eve into eating the fruit and creating the 'fall' gives him the chance to recruit more spirits because now mankind has the freedom to choose his side (and he knows many will...). Even if he knew what the plan of salvation was --as I would think he would have to--he would still be compelled to 'play along' because it happened to provide his only chance at a partial victory (...or a 'less disasterous defeat', you could say. Misery loves company, you know...)

After being cast out of heaven, I doubt that Satan had any illusion he was going to defeat God. He simply embraced his new role as a spoiler.
Perhaps Satan felt that by imposing his will and presence on the decisions and processes that took place at the very start of human existence, he could throw the plan of salvation out of whack.

First, one doesn't gain power by leaving people alone. How is Lucifer supposed to buy up armies and navies and reign with blood and horror... if he leaves Adam and Eve alone?
Second, I think he flattered himself that he was stepping into God's role. HE had knowledge. HE had answers to Adam's questions (even if they weren't the ones Adam wanted.) HE was simply doing what had been done (by God?) on other worlds. HE claims to own and run the whole establishment (cf. 2 Cor. 4:4 which calls him the "god of this world (or age)" and 1 John 5:19 which says (in non-KJV) "the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.") HE can't usurp God unless he attempts to do what God does (cf. John 5:19 "the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.")
