Let's pretend they don't exist...
...and maybe they'll go away.
Keeping references to gambling and homosexuality out of Utah.
Can this actually work? Is there anyone over the age of 21 who honestly doesn't know that you could drive to Nevada and (legally) gamble? If there were, would the sight of an advertisement for a casino immediately create the desire to do it? ("Wow, I didn't know it was so easy to find a place to play slots!") Who exactly are we trying to protect here?
Likewise, what high school student doesn't know there's such a thing as 'homosexuality'? (Do they not watch TV, read newspapers, or have the Internet? As noted yesterday, gays have a significant presence in society now...) High school isn't the place to teach homosexual behavior is right or wrong, but pretending it doesn't exist is dumb.
(Money quote: "I don't teach homosexuality. But if it appears in a textbook, there's nothing I can do to keep students from reading it." Horrors! A student reading about the existence of homosexuality on his own. Why don't we ban the Bible from Sunday School--after all, some student might open it up on his own and read "Song of Solomon"...)
