Damned if you do...

Want reason #3,596 why supporters of 'decency' in society are fighting a no-win battle?

This is a purely hypothetical situation, of course, but suppose you see a commercial you find indecent.  You have two choices: (1) Do Nothing, or (2) Do Something.

If you Do Nothing, you're tacitly saying it's okay...at least, that it's not important enough to actively oppose.  What's to stop them from doing it again in the future, then?  After all, no one said anything the first time...

Suppose you Do Something, then...  You voice your opinion.  You organize others who share your opinion and start a protest.

A protest and a controversy is news, of course, so someone from the media will almost certainly write an article about it.  People will read the article...and, of course, will want to see themselves what the fuss is about, and like any fair news article would, the media source will be compelled to provide links to the offending material. People will naturally be curious, of course, and will visit the website to see this offending ad (probably in such numbers that it causes the website to crash...)

For informational purposes, the media source might also provide an online poll asking your opinion on whether the ad is appropriate or not.  (And, of course, you can't participate in the online poll unless you've seen the ad yourself...)

And, of course, the end result is:  By protesting, you've indirectly allowed tens of thousands of people who wouldn't have heard of the ad in the first place to seek after and see it...which is the opposite of what you wanted to begin with!
